Frequently asked questions.
Who can order? Mid Atlantic Natives is a wholesale, to the trade, grower of native plant species. In order to make native plants available to everyone, we welcome orders from anyone interested in native plants so long as you agree to our "Terms & Conditions". This includes government agencies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and homeowners. There is a $150.00 order minimum before tax (if applicable) and shipping.

How do I order? It's very simple. From the home page, click on a category tab you may be interested in (Bare Root, Plugs, Live Stakes), or use the "Search" tab to search for species (Mertensia virginica, or "Bluebells") or cultural info (such as "Full Sun, Shade, Ferns, etc.)

It's also a good idea to read the category's "About" information which is the first item in each category.

Then, look through the available species. Read the information to see if that species matches your goals and works in your environmental conditions.

If you like it, choose a quantity and add it to your cart. When you are done shopping, select "Check Out" and follow the directions for payment. You will be asked to select from available ship weeks. Select a ship week(s) and make any notes necessary. Please be aware, while we will do our best, we can not guarantee ship dates. (Weather plays a pretty big role here.)

You will receive a confirmation of your paid order. When it's time to ship, we will send you tracking information.

How do I pick up an order instead of paying for shipping? We allow paid order pick ups (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY) at our farm location in Cobbs Creek, VA for INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS . How do I choose the right plants for my area?
Each species we offer has a detailed listing of the best growing/cultural requirements. Our website is searchable for criteria like “plants for shade“, etc. You will want to be sure of your site’s conditions, is it sunny? shaded?, is it wet? exposed to salt? etc. What type of soils do you have? wet? dry? clay? sandy? loam? Are you planting on a hillside where the water runs off very quickly? or in a low area where water collects?  When in doubt contact your local native plant society for a list of species native to your area.

When will my order ship? This can be a complicated answer, mother nature dictates many of the criteria for shipping times.

As close to the requested date as possible.

For plugs we list the expected time the plugs will be ready for shipment. Keeping in mind that there are no guarantees the sun will shine along with other variables which can greatly affect the time the plugs are ready to ship. At checkout you will need to choose a ship week or say ASAP.

For bare root, we ship while plants are dormant, usually mid October through Late March.
For Live Stakes, We cut to order dormant live stakes mid October-Mid April.
How long is the travel time for my delivery via UPS? Well that all depends what state you live in. In state of VA is typically one day. Connecting and near by states like MD, NC, SC, PA, DE, NY, OH,  are typically 2 or sometimes 3 days. For further states like CT, VT, ME, MO, the ship times are 2-4 days. For points west of the Mississippi it can be 4 or more days. For these longer shipment time we strongly suggest paying for an expedited shipment so the plants will not be boxed for so long.

What do I do upon receipt of my plants? Please inspect the box upon arrival. While extremely rare, damage can happen in transit. Take photos of any damage of the box. Open your shipment as soon as possible. Inspect the plant material.

For Bare Root, the plants should be on the medium to not too dry side. This prevents mold and mildew or rot. While some "mold" may be present, it will not affect the success of the plants establishment.

When should I expect to see growth from my bare root shrubs and ferns? It is critical to select the correct species for the environment you are planting into. Please read each species detailed cultural environmental needs. If you are unsure how to plant, please contact us for guidance. Depending on the species they should start showing the same time you see plants in the wild in your area in leaf, some species like ferns may not show as early as others.
When should I take delivery of my bare root plants if my area is much colder then Virginia and the ground is still frozen in April?

You will want to take delivery as early as possible, before the end of March, here is why:

Most plants break, or start to break, dormancy here in Virginia by the beginning of April. Subjecting plants that are breaking dormancy to a severe change in temperatures from Eastern VA to Northern, Western or Southern climates, can cause damage to the cells inside the plants which may kill them. The best option is to take delivery of the plants fully dormant and plant them or heal them in at your location which will allow them to break dormancy when the temps in your specific area tell the plants it is time.

When Will My Plug Tray Order Ship? As soon as they are fully rooted and ready for transplant. Generally this is Late April through Late June. BUT! This highly weather and species dependent.

Live Stakes will ship according to your requested dates. We cut to order!

Before you order:

Please be assured that our goal as native plant growers with over 45 years of experience, is to support the intention and needs of our customers. Whether you are an industry professional or home conservationist, or if you just like GREAT plants! We want your return business!

We are always available to answer questions about a plant's cultural needs or to assist our customers with any questions to make working with Mid Atlantic Natives a superior experience. To do this, we cannot stress enough the importance of selecting the right species for your application and environment. Each lant species had detailed information for its suitable, preferred environment (Sun, wet, dry, acidic, etc.) We provide this information so you can make the best selections and have the best results. (as in, I planted a water plant in a desert dune and don't know why it died!!)

Before selecting plants,please ask yourself:

Are the site conditions correct for the species you select? Do you know how to correctly plant? Are you able to provide the aftercare needed?

It is important to us that you are successful with your investment. We would rather not sell our plants then have a dissatisfied, unprepared customer or, equally as upsetting to us, any plant mortality.

Because we have no control over how plants are handled after they are shipped, or of any element of a planting project from design to installation, we cannot offer any guarantees of plant survival. Please make sure you select plant material suitable for your project’s conditions and environment. All Sales Are Final
