Before you order:
Please be assured that our goal as native plant growers with over 45 years of experience, is to support the intention and needs of our customers. Whether you are an industry professional or home conservationist, or if you just like GREAT plants! We want your return business!
We are always available to answer questions about a plant's cultural needs or to assist our customers with any questions to make working with Mid Atlantic Natives a superior experience. To do this, we cannot stress enough the importance of selecting the right species for your application and environment. Each plant species has detailed information for its suitable, preferred environment (Sun, wet, dry, acidic, etc.) We provide this information so you can make the best selections and have the best results. (as in, I planted a water plant in a desert dune and don't know why it died!!)
Before selecting plants, please ask yourself:
Are the site conditions correct for the species you select? Do you know how to correctly plant? Are you able to provide the aftercare needed?
It is important to us that you are successful with your investment. We would rather not sell our plants then have a dissatisfied, unprepared customer or, equally as upsetting to us, any plant mortality.
Because we have no control over how plants are handled after they are shipped, or of any element of a planting project from design to installation, we cannot offer any guarantees of plant survival. Please make sure you select plant material suitable for your project’s conditions and environment. All Sales Are Final
We are careful to keep varieties true to name, but mistakes sometimes happen. It is mutually agreed that our liability for any errors is confined to replacement with correct species or, if not available, credit of the purchase price.
In the event of an incorrect count we will send the missing items. There is no opportunity for a credit unless those items are not available. The credit will be for the missing amount only.
Damage
Because of the type of packaging and custom-designed box style we use, shipping issues are rare. If there is a problem with your purchased items, it must be reported to us within 72 hours of receipt. Photos of the shipping materials and plants will be requested.
Claims resulting from carrier issues will result in your order being replaced or refunded once the claim is settled with the carrier.
Please report any other problems immediately, and we will make every effort to resolve any issues to your satisfaction. Under no circumstances will the claim amount exceed the order amount.
Inspections
Our nursery stock has been inspected by the Virginia Department of Agriculture. Your order will be shipped with a VA Nursery Inspection certificate. A copy of our current nursery certificate is here.
Need more "Not So Fine Print"? We hope you do! For fun, and because you have to agree to it, please read our full "Terms and Conditions".
Description
About Our Native Bare Root Perennials & Ferns (FAQ’s)
What Are Bare Root Native Plants?
Our Bare root plants are dormant perennials & ferns grown (primarily) in raised beds allowing them to establish a fuller, healthier root system. Raised beds also allow us to dig to order, this means they are not dug from a field (or collected from the wild, EVER).
Once dug, they are cleaned of soil, inspected and then stored for a short period of time in a refrigerated environment.
Bare roots cost a fraction of container-grown plants, making them ideal for large-scale restoration, municipal plantings, or budget-friendly home landscaping.
Bare roots ship with minimal packaging and zero plastic pots, helping reduce environmental impact and landfill waste.
Lightweight and compact, bare roots can be stored temporarily in cool conditions and shipped efficiently perfect for restoration crews or homeowners planning seasonal installs. If you need to temporarily store them prior to installation, just keep them in a cool and dark environment. They can keep in your fridge for weeks!
Tough to find native woodland ephemerals can be commonly found with our bare roots. You can find these species in seed, but success with seed is often limited. It can take 10 years or more with the slow growing plants. Our bare roots are of mature blooming size. Bare roots provide immediate success for rare to find woodland ephemerals, perennials and ferns.
Bare Root Native Plants Are a Smart, Sustainable Choice for Restoration and Landscaping.
We are always available to assist you with any questions or help you may need.
Each species description details the site requirements for the plant. It is important to select suitable plants for your site’s environment. Native plants work in their own unique environment, as a result, and because we have no control over how our plants are cared before or after they are planted:
Please be sure you are selecting the right plants for your application and environment as ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
Native bare root plants are dug and shipped while dormant (weather depending) late November -Late March No bare root will be shipped after late March.
When should I take delivery of my bare root plants if my area is much colder then Virginia and the ground is still frozen in April?
You will want to take delivery as early as possible, here is why:
Most plants break, or start to break, dormancy here in Virginia around mid-March. Subjecting plants that are breaking dormancy to a severe change in temperatures from Eastern VA to Northern, Western or Southern climates, can cause damage to the cells inside the plants which may kill them. The best option is to take delivery of the plants fully dormant and plant them or heal them in at your location which will allow them to break dormancy when the temps in your specific area tell the plants it is time.
