The bold foliage of plantain-leaf sedge (Carex plantaginea) makes it a welcome textural surprise in the woodland garden. Plantain-leaf sedge grows 6-12” tall in part to full shade given moist to average soil. However, it will tolerate that dry, difficult spot in your garden. This delightful sedge has semi-evergreen foliage that is bright green and has a wrinkled appearance, and in May it produces spikes of subtle, purple- brown flowers. Plantain-leaf sedge is a clump forming perennial that grows quickly to form an attractive mass which can be divided regularly. This grass-like, tufted groundcover is striking when used as an edger, accent or massed.
