Ludwigia alternifolia L.
Seedbox
Onagraceae (Evening Primrose Family)
Synonym(s): Ludwigia alternifolia var. linearifolia, Ludwigia alternifolia var. pubescens, Ludwigia alternifolia var. typica
USDA Symbol: LUAL2
USDA Native Status: L48 (N), CAN (N)
A many-branched, smooth-stemmed plant with 1 short-stalked, yellow flower in each upper leaf axil.
The few other species of seedboxes in the East have sessile leaves. Seedboxes are mostly wetland plants and bear distinctive, box-like fruit, square on top and filled with many seeds. Other members of the genus do not have such fruit.
Rattlebox is a North American perennial wildflower found in wet areas as swamps, stream banks, freshwater tidal marshes, ditches and pond edges. It prefers acidic, sandy, moist to wet soils but does have some tolerance for other soils. Flowers appear in summer for 2-3 months and the delicate yellow blooms last for a day or less. These are followed by squarish seed capsules that rattle when shaken. They are pollinated primarily by bees. Plant in rain or water gardens or at stream and lake edges. This plant is heat tolerant.
