Formerly known as Aster macrophyllus, this is a fast spreading groundcover aster for shady woodlands and gardens. Adaptable to light to deep shade and many soil types it mixes well with other woodland plants such as ferns, Trilliums and Phlox. Flowering stalks tend to be sparse and widespread with lots of leafy cover in between. The large basal leaves grow up to 6-8 inches tall with flower stalks up to 1-2 feet tall. Flowers appear from August to October and range from white to pink to blue. Our nursery ecotype has pinkish-blue flowers. Plants are typically not evergreen but basal leaves can persist well into the winter in mild climates. Zone 3-8. VA ecotype.
