Lobelia puberula, Downy Lobelia Native Perennial Plant Plugs, Native Wildflowers, Native Pollinator Support Plants, Organically Grown (Copy)

Lobelia puberula – Downy Lobelia.
Lobelia is a large genus, with over 400 species worldwide; nearly 50 are found in North America. Most are herbaceous – as are all North American continental species, but a few African and Hawaiian species are trees or shrubs. The leaves are alternate in either a spiral or two rows on the stem. Most Lobelia flowers have an opening on the top of the corolla tube nearly or entirely to the base, and may also have side fenestrations. The corolla is typically two-lipped, with the upper lip having two lobes (usually erect) and the lower lip almost always three lobes (usually spreading.) The 5 stamens are joined together in a tube with the stamens exserted from the corolla, usually through the opening in the top of the corolla tube.

Lobelia puberula is the most common blue Lobelia in the Southeast.

Downy Lobelia is a native herbaceous perennial in the Bellflower family (Campanulaceae). It is found throughout Alabama. Downy Lobelia occurs on creek banks, in swamps, in wet ditches, and in swamps. Plants can be very common after disturbance that has exposed bare soil. Downy Lobelia grows from one to three feet in height. The entire stems has short hairs on it, not just at the base. The sessile leaves are dark green and pubescent below. Their margins are toothed. The stems may be branched near the top, especially if the plant has been damaged. The flowers are blue with a white throat. They vary in size, and several varieties have been named based on flower size and amount of pubescence. The fruit is a capsule filled with many tiny seed. Downy Lobelia can be grown in bog gardens, along creeks or ponds, in areas with poor drainage, and in containers.

Lobelia puberula, downy lobelia is now in flower. The downy lobelia of the Bellwort Family (Campanulaceae), is known from all three counties in Delaware. It can be found primarily in the Coastal Plain province, and only rarely in the Piedmont.
The species grows in meadows, old-fields, grassy roadsides, powerlines, tree-lines, and occasionally in wet meadows. The blue flowers are a nectar source for hummingbirds. The generic name, Lobelia is for Mathias de L’Obel, a 16th century Belgian botanist. The specific name, puberula is Latin for “tiny hairs.” The downy lobelia is one of 9 native species of Lobelia in Delaware. Except for the Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) – which has red flowers – all of Delaware’s native Lobelias have blue flowers. Although some species have very pale blue flowers, which sometimes appear white.
